And Now For Something Entirely Different…

Trying to earn a living

In one of my many brainstorms with Higgy we stumbled upon the idea of concert photography. We both enjoy and know something about photography and who doesn’t love concerts? It’s a bit of a stretch but we might just be able to convince some local bands to let us photograph them in action. It would a fun way to make a little extra cash for my great spring break excursion to the Grand Canyon. Or maybe a lot of extra cash.

I’d hate to break it to you, but there are a gazillion concert photographers out there and almost nobody makes any money at it. Have fun with it, definitely, but don’t expect to make much of anything from it.

On the flip side, there are those out there who take photos at night clubs of the drunken patrons and make a killing selling prints and web sized images.

I thought as much. So, are you referring to something like party pics? Would I have to be licensed for that?

You should probably have a business license in the city you’re doing business in, and basic liability insurance. The legal requirements for being a professional photographer will vary from city to city, state to state. But yes you can wander from bar to bar doing this party pics and then put proofs up online to allow patrons to buy prints of their favorites.
